The Evolution of Privacy on Facebook
I find it interesting. But not necessarily in a bad way. However I am one to be pretty transparent on the internet. Also note that I don’t post pictures of those raging keggers I attend every weekend.
tnypxl: On Facebook Privacy
People constantly have their panties in a bundle about Facebook privacy. I get it, people don’t want their transparent lives (as presented on facebook) to be accessible all over the web or even a family member. Fair enough.
But one solution is to use discretion. Facebook was originally intended for walled gardens like universities, colleges and the work place. Now it’s a general purpose social network for not just students but family members, friends, co-workers, enemies, allies. So when you post those awesome photos of that kegger you attended, think twice. Your audience is larger and not as forgiving or forgetful.
But it’s not just the user’s lack of discretion. It’s the idea that walled gardens promote indiscretion. So when facebook finally opened up to everyone, the “like-minded” status quo began to wane. Your loud-mouth, crass antics are no longer welcome and are intensely observed by everybody and your mother.
To me the solution is simple. Use discretion. Turn down the transparency a couple notches. Then proceed to stop complaining about the privacy you so willingly give up to begin with.
